Prep left wing for covering... 11/30/03 - I swapped-out the wings today and prepped the left wing structure for covering. Additionally, I reversed the bolt orientation on the aft long wing channel bolts and installed a new door-up catch socket in the outboard location as described in the manual (you may remember, I had located both sockets in an inboard position). I also applied a bit of SuperFil to the leading edge wrap, which necessitated an overnight cure, so I was unable to get the bottom fabric sheet applied as I had originally intended. There's always tomorrow! ;^) Here, I have the covered right wing leaning against the shop wall (resting on carpet sections to protect the fabric):
Beginning prep work on the left wing structure:
Installing a -new- door-up catch socket in the next photo. I decided it would be easier to get a new socket and install it rather than go through the pain of removing the lateral tank tube clamp. This was a very easy installation. In the photo, you can see both sockets installed (with the help of the arrows):
Removing the protective covering on the leading edge wrap:
SuperFil is applied to the leading edge wrap:
I also removed all hardware (hinges, etc.) and cleaned the structure with a tack cloth. I'm pretty sure the wing is now ready to begin covering after I finish-sand the fill on the leading edge wrap and inspect and wipe it one more time. I have two more vacation days left after today and will hopefully be able to get both top and bottom fabric sheets applied before heading back to the office. I have nearly thirty hours on the project during my vacation to date and have managed to loaf around as much as I have 'needed' to, so it's been a great time off so far. Marilyn is on her way home from Wisconsin this afternoon and me and the pets (KipperCat, Mirfy and Mackenzie) will all be happy to see her! More updates soon... |
