Wing covering continues, apply edge tapes...

11/28/03 - I finally made it back out to the shop today after missing the last three days for various reasons, not the least of which is, I am on vacation!  ;^)

In two sessions lasting a total of about five hours today, I applied the root rib tapes, all edge tapes and started the final adhesive coat process required to complete the fabric process for the first wing.

In the morning, I worked on the root ribs tapes:

After returning from a nice lunch date with my son and his family, I began working on the edge tapes by marking all areas with either a chalk line or pencil.  Here is a shot of the trailing edge spar after marking and applying the initial bed of adhesive:

Here I have applied the bottom tape for the leading edge:

In this photo, I am beginning to apply the top tape for the leading edge:

After application of the tip bow tape:

I also spent a considerable amount of time double checking all edge and rib tapes for loose edges and hitting them lightly with the smaller iron to provide a nice sealed edge.  (Ed tells me there is nothing worse than to begin applying the primer and see your tape-edges starting to curl up.)

After checking all edges, I used the rest of the adhesive I had in the shop to begin applying a final adhesive coat over the leading edge wrap, top and bottom root skins and the trailing edge spar.

I will finish this wing next trip out to the shop after a bit more adhesive is applied and another very thorough inspection for loose edges.

Oh yeah...we had a bit of SNOW on the ground today when I got finished in the shop:

More updates soon...
