Setup wings for covering, relocate door-up catch socket... 10/26/03 - Today, I was able to get both wing tip-bows drilled so they'll fit on the wing stands properly, relocate the first of two door-up catch sockets, strip the protective covering from the first wing and generally get things ready for covering to begin. Here are a couple of shots with the first wing held in the stands (I REALLY like these stands!):
Here stripping the leading edge wrap covering:
Here is the door-up catch socket after relocation. Note it sits just outside the pre-drilled hole in the bottom root skin. The build manual indicates a specific dimension for the location, but also mentions to center the socket under the hole in the wrap. I ultimately chose to center under the hole because it SEEMED TO ME to be the best location, but according to Ed at Rans, it falls JUST OUTSIDE the root skin.
It wasn't a big deal to move the socket, just a bit frustrating. I am VERY GRATEFUL that Andrew Rowley from Ballarat, Australia has been following my progress here on the website as he is building his own S-6S and for mentioning the fact that he ran into the same discrepancy-understanding as I did regarding placement of the sockets. I have a couple of questions I've emailed to Ed for clarification on before I begin covering, but it looks like I'll be able to get started next weekend as I had hoped. More updates soon... |
