Wings...Fuel Tank, Nav/Strobe mount & wiring, rib drilling 08/03/03 - Today, I swapped out to work on the right wing and brought it up to the same completion point as the left wing and remembered I STILL HAVE A BIT OF WORK TO GO BEFORE COVERING! Starting out, I trimmed down the fuel filler neck on the right side tank:
And as I was beginning work on the light kit mount, I took a break to chat with fellow EAA Chapter 21 member, Bill Gowin for a few minutes. I'm always happy to chat with a visitor! Thanks for stopping in, Bill! Here's a quick 'photo review' of today's light mount process:
After that, I remembered that I must still drill the top and bottom ribs along the centerline for rib riveting during the covering process. DOH! I was thinking last evening that I was nearly ready for covering, but it'll be another few hours. It's always something, right? When I got started, I was UNHAPPY with my hole alignment:
and I was even using a NEW (my old punch was pretty much dead) automatic center punch I received last week from Brown Aviation. BTW, that punch is going BACK tomorrow...it's a piece of junk compared to the last one I bought from Brown. After grumbling about it a bit, I hopped in the car and ran to Sears & picked up a nice handy MANUAL punch, so I could get the holes exactly where I want them. I managed to do five of the eight topsides on the right wing, leaving three plus deburring everything BEFORE doing the same to the bottom side, then the left wing. After that, I started my yard work, but pooped out after doing the front side and will finish that tomorrow or the next day, as time allows. I'll make a prediction here...AT SOME POINT, I WILL BE READY FOR FABRIC WORK! ;^) More updates soon... |
