Horizontal Stabilizers, Elevators...and vacation days!

04/18/03 - Today was my fifth and final vacation day for the week and after today's work, I can say I feel highly satisfied with how my my time was spent!

I managed to work in the shop for nearly twenty-five hours and got a LOT accomplished on the project, but more importantly (to me), went fishing on Tuesday -AND- today with my dad! In between, we had plumbing work done, I sold a couple of sets of coins at auction, we accomplished our normal gardening and yard work, I got to spend some quality time with Marilyn when we took Alyssa to the zoo, played around with Kipper, Mirfy and Mackenzie, got a haircut, bought a new pair of work shoes, got my car serviced and last but not least, put a new set of tires on the Rivy!

All in all, very much like I had hoped for it to go!  Following are a few photos of today's work.

End ribs are clecoed to the inside of the horizontal stabilizers:

Each end rib gets a set of three small angled braces installed to keep the rib from twisting when the fabric is attached:

The stabilizers also have compression ribs installed to help form the inverted airfoil (right side):

Left side stabilizer after installing the compression ribs:

Both stabilizers are back in their positions and the right side elevator has been hung for prefit:

Left side elevator also in place:

Ok, now it's -really- starting to look like a tail!

I'm not sure how many hours I have left to complete this section, but I still need to install the trim tab assembly, elevator push-pull tube and yoke, rudder horns and I'm sure a bit more that I can't remember right away but the tail section has really come along quickly in my opinion, although it probably has much to do with spending more than a couple of hours at a time actually working on something...

More updates soon...
