Windshield and doors... 03/16 - 03/17 - 03/22/03 - This week I've spent just a bit of time working on the doors after finishing up the windshield last Saturday. I mentioned last that my granddaughter was coming to visit last Sunday and we spent just a bit of time playing in the Coyote and otherwise:
I got back to work a bit on Monday and Tuesday fitting the door frames and trial fitting the lexan sheets to see how it was going to go together:
While fitting the door ribs, I had a question and Ed at Rans verified that I had the incorrect part number for door ribs. Apparently the packing person had sent ribs for the bubble door and I've got the standard flat panel - I offered to wait for Rans to send me the $250 optional bubble door panels, but they opted for replacing the $10 ribs instead. ;-) This one looks ok from this angle but both ribs are bent to allow them to be rotated out against the bubble door.
The door frames have a top channel which gets riveted to the frame and (eventually) holds the top side of the window:
I had planned to get a VERY EARLY start today, but the weather was so beautiful, I worked in the yard from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM, so I was only able to get the right side door drilled, clecoed and the lexan trimmed, but what the heck, there's always tomorrow! Starting the task today by laying out the door frame to mark and drill for the window attachment:
In the next photo, the frame has been marked and drilled and the window is now attached along the top channel with clecos. I also removed the protective covering on both sides from inside the frame to the outside edges. You really have to be careful with the lexan material, it's very tough, but you can mark the surface almost by looking at it wrong. Notice I am working on the PASSENGER door first :^)
The next photo shows the door frame and panel drilled, clecoed and hung in a trial fit. Notice here that I've rolled it outside in the sun - I had MANY neighbors come by for a chat today.
Back inside the garage with the top corners notched with everything clamped in position and ready to be scored for the final trim cut:
After final trim cut and reinstall - I find I need to sand back the aft edge of the windshield a bit along with the forward edge of the door window in order to provide a nice straight edge along the centerline of the Station 2 vertical tube. You can't really see it in the next photo, but it's there.
If I'm not too terribly sore tomorrow (from four hours of yard work and three and a half hours in the shop today) I'll start on the other side door OR I may just hang in and watch a ballgame if the Yankees or the Hoosiers are playing! Either way, I'll be back at it pretty soon...it's really hard to imagine this much fun being LEGAL!!! More updates soon... |
