Windshield and doors...

03/15/03 - Today, I completed the windshield pre-fit process after running a finish trim/sanding over the windshield deck to smooth out the lines.

I started by marking and drilling the deck (which becomes the bottom windshield attachment point) to #30 on 3" spacing and then fitting the windshield into place, transfer drill and cleco into place.

Here are a few photos:

After finishing the bottom edge, I drilled the 'Z' strips, which are metal sections installed inside the station 2 vertical posts used to attach the aft edge of the windshield to the fuselage then clamped and transfer drilled the aft edge of the windshield and clecoed the windshield to the 'Z' strips.

Next, I marked the windshield at the station 2 vertical posts and along the topside of the deck, removed everything and trimmed the aft edge to the centerline of the station 2 post and 5/8" below the mark along the topside edge of the deck and redrilled all #30 windshield holes to #27 (Rans tip - this is supposed to reduce stress cracks).

I still need to finish sand the trimmed edges as they're a little crooked, but they'll be fine in the finished product.

Here are a few photos after reinstallation:

Now, if you'll look at the image above, you can see a single cleco installed in the center of the station 2 horizontal...yes, it's NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THERE!  :)

I got carried away the other day when I drilled these and according to Ed at Rans, he did the same thing during his first assembly.  He says it's not a problem and instead of the rivet being UNDER the material, it'll be through.

Tomorrow, if I have an opportunity to work in the shop I plan to begin on the doors, but my Granddaughter Alyssa is bringing her dad over and we may just visit all day!

After all this putting together and taking apart, it's apparently affecting me.  I decided the Coyote needed to go back on the gear, so I spent another few minutes at the end of my workday putting the gear and wheels back on.

More updates soon...
