Main gear - COMPLETE!

03/08/03 - Today was a BEAUTIFUL DAY and I could only force myself to work about four hours in the shop. We've had our share of dreary winter days and with a sunny 65° day on hand, I worked in the yard for the first half of the day.  (can you tell if I'm ready for Springtime yet?)

Last Saturday, I left off with the axles not drilled and cut, so that was my task for the day and it's probably a good thing I had budgeted at least FOUR HOURS for work!  I broke the first two drill bits I tried and was about ready to dial up Rans and order a set of predrilled axles!  ;-)

The axles are finished pretty much like the upper gear legs were (punch pilot, chase with 3/16", finish to 1/4"), except for some reason, I found this part exceedingly difficult.  I'm not sure if it's because the stock is so much smaller in diameter or maybe I was just trying too hard, but it was a job.

In any case, the job is complete and the finished work looks ok, so I'll say I'm satisfied...following are a few photos.

Initial fit after drilling (and a trip to Sears for replacement drill bits!):

After initial fit, I cut each shaft so they don't protrude past the socket end (tip from Ed at Rans)

After I finished this part (and after I spent a half hour tossing a tennis ball to Mackenzie) I set up a work table for pre-fitting the windshield and doors:

I finished today's work by cutting the fiberglass windshield deck to size so I can begin fitting the windshield when I get back to the shop next time, which may be tomorrow, but the weather's supposed to get yucky again and I AM READY FOR SPRINGTIME, so I may just boycott work until next weekend!

More updates soon...
