Forward contour formers... 01/03/03 - I mentioned last that I'd stopped short of doing something WRONG in order to ask the Rans builder experts (basically anyone with an hour's more build time than me) which way the flanged edge needed be oriented. One question provided FOUR QUICK RESPONSES (thanks, Rick, Mike, AJ and Ed!) so this afternoon I got out to the shop and got the right side former placed. The forward contour formers are shaped around a 2" diameter tube (I used the aft wing spar) then clamped in place, drilled, riveted and trimmed to fit flush with the firewall (as necessary). These pieces are used in order to provide something for the (eventual) fabric covering to form against when installed. I think the first one looks pretty good for an amateur. Remember, this -is- an amateur built project! :-) Following are a few photos:
I only had to drill out ONE rivet!:
I plan to do the other side tomorrow. More updates soon... |
